Better Than Kool-Aid: Election Night Drinks

Obama 2008

You better believe that’s what Obama’s going to be doing tonight in Chicago as he waits for those polls to close. Election Day is finally upon us, after eight years of unmitigated hell (I know this is a food blog, but my hate for W. knows no bounds), and this evening is going to be one hell of a nail biter. Unless, that is, the polls are all correct and Obama locks this thing up before we can even care about the West Coast. Either way, there will be cause for drinking: drinking to calm your nerves as you wait for each state to be called, drinking to celebrate a glorious Obama victory, drinking to mourn a… I can’t bring myself to say it, I won’t even consider it, but you know why you’d be drinking and sad. (And, of course, all of these reasons can be adjusted for your particular political persuasion).

So if you’re gonna sit around and get wasted anyway, why not drink something in step with the day as a whole?

Below are some recipes for political- and election-themed drinks to take the edge off/dull the pain/bolster the party.

And remember: No matter what happens, rioting is not okay. Especially in DC. I need my stuff and my city intact, ok?

The Baroque Obama [Source]
1 part (3/4 oz.) Fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 parts (1 1/2 oz.) Jamaican rum
1 part (3/4 oz.) gin
1 dash maraschino

Shake lime juice and sugar well. Add rum, gin and ice. Shake well and serve with maraschino floated on top. Can be served over ice, or up in a martini glass.

The Blue ‘Bama

1 ounce Hpnotiq
1 ounce vanilla vodka
2 ounces lemon-lime soda
Lemon twist, for garnish

Mix all ingrediants with ice in a shaker. Shake, and serve on the rocks with garnish.

Maverick El President

2 parts gold rum
1 part dry vermouth
Maraschino cherry, for garnish

Mix rum and vermouth in shaker with ice, then serve up in a martini glass with cherry for garnish.

Flag Salute [Source]

2 parts grenadine
2 parts blueberry martini mix
3 parts vodka

This is a layered shot. Pour the grenadine first; then float the vodka by pouring it slowly off the back of a spoon (if the vodka is cold, this will go easier). Finally, float the blueberry martini mix on top the same way.

Vote on the Rocks [Source]

2 parts sour cherry mixer
1 part tequila
Cherry

Mix sour mixer and tequila in a shaker with lots of ice. Strain into a glass and garnish with the cherry. Can be served on the rocks or up, your choice.

Grassroots Gimlet [Source]

2 parts sour mix
1 part gin
lime wedge
wheatgrass

In a rocks glass, combine gin and sour mix with plenty of ice. Stir and garnish with lime and wheatgrass. Look, just go for the wheatgrass, ok? Think of freaking your friends out as an added bonus, and that stuff is good for you, so you can justify your high alcohol consumption with the vitamins from the grass.

Of course, when in doubt, a martini, Negroni, or six-pack will do!

And DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!!!
